Former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney expressed disbelief Thursday over the act of terror that rocked his home state of Massachusetts earlier in the week.
“Why would people be so demented, so stunted in their intellectual capacity that they would do something so horrible?” Romney asked on CNN.At least three people were killed and more than 170 were injured Monday when two explosive devices detonated near the finish line of the 117th running of the Boston Marathon.
Romney served as governor of Massachusetts from 2003-2007, and in the 1980s and 1990s he was a major figure in the Boston-area Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints community. He presently has a home in Belmont, Mass.
Romney on Thursday also praised President Obama for a speech he gave earlier in the day at a memorial service for the victims.
?"I thought the president gave a suburb address," Romney said. "It was an inspiring day."
Obama spoke at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, about a mile from where the twin blasts went off. The president paid tribute to both the city of Boston and to the victims who died or were injured in the attack.
"I have no doubt: you will run again,” Obama said. “You will run again 'cause that's what the people of Boston are made of. Your resolve is the greatest rebuke to whoever committed this heinous act. If they sought to intimidate us, to terrorize us … it should be pretty clear right now they picked the wrong city to do it."
