(aluph). The best translation is "sheikh" for a leader of a part-Arab people. Aluph literally means "strong man," and can mean "leader." (Root aleph an ox, or a thousand, or a military unit slightly larger than a battalion and tentatively regarded as a thousand strong). The noble title of "duke" in English (or duc in French, etc.) derives from the Latin duceo, meaning "I lead."
