I have a theory....that the disparity in growth rates of Britain and Spain starting in the 16th century through to the world wars was caused by the Reconquista, especially the fanaticism of Isobel. When the riches of the New World started to roll in, Spain had no middle class who knew what to do with it. A simplification I know....

A simplification but valid. Moreover, the distribution of conquered land among Christian nobles meant a kind of bastard feudalism that lasted into the late nineteenth century and was one of the causes of the various Spanish civil wars of the last two hundred years. Rafael 12:10, 14 June 2013 (EDT)
