For Immediate Release April 11, 2013 Readout of the President’s Call with University of Connecticut Women’s Basketball Coach Geno

Yesterday afternoon, the President called Head Coach Geno Auriemma to congratulate him and the UConn Huskies on their eighth National Championship in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament.  He commended the Huskies on an extraordinary season and run in the tournament.  The President also asked Coach Auriemma to relay his congratulations to Breanna Stewart, who was named most outstanding player of the Final Four.  The President said he looks forward to seeing the team at the White House to honor their victory.

President Obama Signs Connecticut Disaster Declaration

The President today declared a major disaster exists in the State of Connecticut and ordered Federal aid to supplement state and local recovery efforts in the area affected by a severe winter storm and snowstorm during the period of February 8-11, 2013.

Federal funding is available to state and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the severe winter storm and snowstorm in Fairfield, Hartford, Litchfield, Middlesex, New Haven, New London, Tolland, and Windham Counties and the Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan Tribal Nations located within New London County.

In addition, Federal funding is available to state and eligible local governments on a cost-sharing basis for snow assistance for a continuous 48-hour period during or proximate to the incident period in Fairfield, Litchfield, Middlesex, New London, Tolland, and Windham Counties and the Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan Tribal Nations located within New London County.  This assistance will be provided for a 72-hour period in Hartford and New Haven Counties.

Federal funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures for all counties and Tribes within the state.

W. Craig Fugate, Administrator, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Department of Homeland Security, named Albert Lewis as the Federal Coordinating Officer for federal recovery operations in the affected area. 

FEMA said additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the state and warranted by the results of further damage assessments.

For Immediate Release February 10, 2013 President Obama Signs Connecticut Emergency Declaration

The President today declared an emergency exists in the State of Connecticut and ordered federal aid to supplement state and local response efforts due to the emergency conditions resulting from a severe winter storm beginning on February 8, 2013, and continuing.

The President's action authorizes the Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), to coordinate all disaster relief efforts which have the purpose of alleviating the hardship and suffering caused by the emergency on the local population, and to provide appropriate assistance for required emergency measures, authorized under Title V of the Stafford Act, to save lives and to protect property and public health and safety, and to lessen or avert the threat of a catastrophe in all eight counties and the Tribal Nations of Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan in the State of Connecticut.

Specifically, FEMA is authorized to identify, mobilize, and provide at its discretion, equipment and resources necessary to alleviate the impacts of the emergency.  Emergency protective measures, including direct federal assistance, will be provided at 75 percent federal funding.  This emergency assistance will be provided for a period of 48 hours.

Rep. Himes ready to race fellow Connecticut reps. for new Twitter followers

Rep. Jim Himes (D-Conn.) is ready to issue a new Twitter challenge to his fellow Connecticut representatives.

Himes commented late Monday that Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) has finally succeeded in passing Himes's follower count on Twitter, though just barely, with 8,323 compared to 8,315. 

Ok. So @chrismurphyct just passed my follower #. I could mourn, or I could point out he's a friggin' senator now. So w/5 CT districts....

Himes and Murphy have gotten competitive over Twitter followers in the past, notably last January, when they engaged in a race for new followers, which concluded with Himes giving to the charity of Murphy's choice. 

But since Murphy won his bid for the Connecticut Senate seat last November, Himes is considering leaving him to "his rarefied and stately senatorial realm" and taking on a couple of other Connecticut representatives instead.

So far, Reps. Elizabeth Esty (D) and Joe Courtney (D) have not responded to Himes's challenge. Esty, a new member of the House, has only about 250 followers on Twitter; Courtney has more than 5,000.
